Conventional Evaluativity

چکیده
Some expressions, such as ‘generous’ and ‘stingy’, are used not only to describe the world around us. They also evaluate things which they applied. In this paper, I suggest a novel account of how evaluation is conveyed—the conventional triggering view. It partly agrees disagrees with both standard semantic view its popular pragmatic contender. Like former unlike latter, my has it that conveyed due meaning sentences in question. Unlike much like suggests secondary rather than primary content.

Extracting Contextual Evaluativity
Recent work on evaluativity or sentiment in the language sciences has focused on the contributions that lexical items provide. In this paper, we discuss contextual evaluativity, stance that is inferred from lexical meaning and pragmatic environments. Focusing on assessor-grounding claims likeWe liked him because he so clearly disliked Margaret Thatcher, we build a corpus and construct a system ...
متن کاملAntonymy and Evaluativity
The goal of this paper is to characterize and account for the systematic distribution of a semantic property, “evaluativity”. A construction is evaluative if it makes reference to a degree that exceeds a contextually specified standard. The term comes from Neeleman et al. (2004); Seuren (1978) alternatively refers to this property as ‘orientedness’ and Bierwisch (1989) as ‘norm-relatedness’. Th...
متن کاملPOLITICAL-ADS: An annotated corpus for modeling event-level evaluativity
This paper presents a corpus targeting evaluative meaning as it pertains to descriptions of events. The corpus, POLITICAL-ADS is drawn from 141 television ads from the 2008 U.S. presidential race and contains 3945 NPs and 1549 VPs annotated for scalar sentiment from three different perspectives: the narrator, the annotator, and general society. We show that annotators can distinguish these pers...
متن کاملEvaluativity across adjective and construction types: An experimental study
An adjectival construction is evaluative if and only if it conveys that the property associated with the adjective exceeds a relevant threshold. The questions of which adjectival constructions are evaluative and why have formed the foundation for semantic theories of these constructions and of adjectives themselves (Klein 1980, von Stechow 1984), although it’s been alleged that these theories a...
متن کاملConventional and Non-conventional Presupposition
Presuppositions are very important in our understanding of how background and context determine the interpretation of a sentence. However, if we study some of the things that have been claimed to be presuppositions, we find that it is a very miscellaneous collection of things. Here are some examples: (1) Harry saw the man kiss her presupposes that Harry and the man denote uniquely existing, for...
